Glitz Salons CEO Cherie Barnett wasn’t looking to start a tradition when she held her first Cut-a-Thon 19 years ago after losing a client to leukemia.
‘After that I just buried my head in the sand and wanted it all to go away,? she said. ‘I never wanted to hear that word again.?
Now Barnett and stylists from four Glitz salons are gearing up for the seventh annual Cut-A-Thon to benefit the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan.
‘The idea was resurrected seven years ago when a young girl’s Make-A-Wish was to get a makeover from us,? Barnett said. ‘It’s something we all feel so good about that it’s never going to go away.?
The event kicks off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 27 at the Glitz salon on Baldwin Road. The day includes a 5k run, car show, live music, inflatable games, a silent auction, raffles, pizza, hot dogs, and appearances by famous princesses and superheroes.
Glitz stylists will be on hand to cut hair for a $20 donation.
‘The haircutting we offer becomes almost insignificant once people take part in the entire event,? Barnett said.
Other attractions include the princess pass, with which young girls can get a professional updo, tiara, and photograph with a famous princess, and a ‘Deal or No Deal? themed raffle.
‘Our day is all about a bargain,? Barnett said. ‘The Deal or No Deal cases are $10, but the items inside them range in value from $25-$100.?
Items donated for auction include a $2,000 wedding gown from Arena Bridal, sports memorabilia, autographs, and golf packages.
One-hundred-percent of proceeds go directly to Children’s Leukemia Foundation and are tax-deductible, she said.
‘It’s important for people to know they should come, even if they don’t need a haircut,? Barnett added. ‘We guarantee they’ll have a good time.?
