Two Oxford sisters came away from the Oakland County Fair with several prizes for their work with horses and goats, as well as horsemanship skills.
At the July fair, 17-year-old Bridget Standifer’a 2008 Oxford High School graduate’was named Caprine Queen in the goats division of the livestock court.
She also won Senior Goat Showmanship and showed horses, winning the Reserve Grand Champion Over Fences.
Logan Standifer, a 15-year-old who’ll be a sophomore this fall at OHS, competed in equitation competition in both saddle seat and hunt seat.
She also earned Reserve Champion honors for speed and action (where a horse is judged on both speed and accuracy) and won the Indiana Flags timed event (where a horseback rider must pick up a flag, race down to the other end and put it into a bucket without it falling out).
Bridget’s horse is a Pinto named Rayne while Logan’s is a Morgan-Hackney pony named Blue.
The girls? mother, Amy Lattin, said she’s very proud of what her daughters were able to accomplish.
‘They put a lot of hard work into preparing for the fair,? she said. ‘The preparation is something that goes on all year long. They were very dedicated to preparing their animals for fair.?
Lattin described caring for animals as a ?24/7? job, where emergencies have to be handled immediately’even when in the middle of the night.
The goats need to be fed at dawn every day. ‘My kids do all the care for their own animals,? she said. ‘They do all the work and I’m very proud they’re able to go out and show and do well.?
Both girls were pleased with their results at the Fair.
‘My horse has gone through a lot of training,? said Bridget. ‘We did jumping and all different types of things and she excelled in everything.?
Added Logan: ‘I think I did pretty good, especially since this is my pony’s first year. He’s a young pony and just got trained this winter. I got some trophies and placed in all my classes.?
In the past, Bridget has won several English Over Fences Awards and was Grand Champion last year. She was Grand Champion for Goat Showmanship.
Logan also competed in last year’s event.
