Concours d’Elegance-fine cars, great toilet
There are two Concours d’Elegance attractions each year. One is at Pebble Beach, CA, the second at Oakland University, benefitting MeadowBrook Hall.
August 3, 10,000 people paraded the OU grounds viewing 235 automobiles. They came to see the magnificent cars of the world, the rare, the unique.
There was a 1932 Helicron (a car with an airplane propeller), 16-cylinder vehicles, Dusenbergs, Jaguars, Ferraris, Alfa Romeos, Graham-Paiges and of course, Chryslers, DeSotos, Cadillacs, Packards, Olds, Fords, Buicks, etc.
It’s the 30th year for this MeadowBrook benefitting gala. MeadowBrook (now Hall) was built for Matilda Dodge’s family. Yes, the Dodge company.
It’s a magnificent, historical, huge home now with museum effects and rooms for celebrations and observations. Been invited there a few times myself.
Mrs. Dodge gave some of her acreage to Michigan State University for them to start Oakland University.
Among the people attracted to Concours d’Elegance was daughter Luan and husband Bob.
‘Which car did you like the best?? I asked Luan. ‘I liked the B.A.T. II. There were only 3 made and a man from Traverse City developed this one,? she said.
What did she like about it? The ways the lines came together in the front. ‘What else,? I asked.
The toilet trailer.
This was no port-a-potty, or Pua t’Potie. There were his and hers entrances on a livable trailer. There was a line at his, but none at hers. Inside, Luan had choices of two wooden, 6-panel doors. She turned a knob gently, not to scare someone, and found it welcoming.
That done, and back on the other side of the wooden, 6-panel door, Lu looked around. There was a 3-foot long counter with a full mirror, a sink and drying towels.
Ok, Lu. You saw 235, highly polished, ultra expensive autos displayed on a private, manicured golf course, so what do you remember most?
The trailer toilet.

I’ve had a half dozen tomatoes off my three plants this year. Something about them is different. I think tomatoes nowadays have tougher, larger cores. Just like the March, store-bought tomatoes.

Monkeys peel bananas from the bottom so they don’t have those ‘stringy things? to pick off. Also, you should take your bananas apart when you get them home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. These notes courtesy of the Porcupine Press.

The song ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame? was written 100 years ago. The writer, Jack Norworth, had never been to a ballgame.
He was on a New York subway train in 1908 when he noticed a sign announcing ‘Baseball Today – Polo Grounds.? Words popped into his head, he patted his pockets searching for scrap paper and the song was born.
Norworth wrote more than 2,500 songs, including ‘Shine on, Harvest Moon.?
If Norworth was around today, and followed the Detroit Tigers, the song would be ‘Don’t Take Me to a Tiger Game, I Don’t Care If I Ever See Them Again!?
In February and March, the Tigers are annually picked for a World Series finish. In June and July the Lions are pegged for the Super Bowl, in August the Pistons are hanging another banner.
Bless our Detroit Red Wings. They are our heroes, but they are the only Detroit team losing attendance. Go figure?
