There’s no sugar-coating it.
With only one win under their belts, it’s been a disappointing season for the Oxford girls varsity golf team.
In the recent Flint Metro League tournament, the girls finished 8th out of nine teams with a total score of 458.
But Coach Terry Kelley is hoping brighter days are ahead next season.
‘We’re optimistic for next year,? he said. ‘We hope to get some younger kids in. Getting our numbers up is our first goal.?
On Thursday, the team will likely see its last play of the year as the ladies compete in the regional tournament at the Lapeer Country Club. ‘We’re probably not going to be able to qualify for the state tournament this year,? Kelley said. ‘We’re just not there yet.?
However, the coach noted that throughout the season the ladies have ‘worked hard and improved.?
‘Their attitude seems pretty good,? he said.
Once the team increases in size, Kelley said it can begin to focus getting girls who play more in the off-season, i.e. private lessons, tournaments and practicing everyday.
‘The teams that are successful, their girls are active all summer long,? Kelley said.
Here’s how the ladies did in their last four dual meets of the season:
