Troopers arrest area man on sexual assault charges

Michigan State Police troopers from the Groveland Township post arrested a 44-year-old Holly man at his residence Oct. 23 with a warrant charging five counts of sexual assault.
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the warrant charging Cary VanBuren with three counts of criminal sexual conduct first degree and two counts of criminal sexual conduct second degree. He was arraigned on the counts Oct. 24 at 52-2 District Court, with bond set at $250,000 cash, no 10 percent.
All five counts are felonies and stem from an investigation begun by the Michigan State Police in West Branch. The victim, now 19, told troopers that from the time he was a child until he was a teenager, VanBuren repeatedly sexually assaulted him at several locations in Michigan and Colorado.
VanBuren has a previous criminal history. In 1983 and in 1987, while living in Tennessee, he was charged with aggravated sexual battery and aggravated rape against children. He pleaded to lesser charges. In 2000, he was accused of sexually assaulting a child in Arenac County, but was never charged.
A preliminary examination has been set for 1:30 p.m., Nov. 3, at 52-2 District Court.
