Women gathering around a quilting frame is an old American tradition.
These Lake Orion community volunteers have kept that tradition alive since last March when they started making a handmade quilt for their annual raffle.
The raffle is to benefit the Friends of the Library for the Orion Township Library.
‘It took about 220 handquilted hours to make this quilt,? said Coordinator, Candy Plattenberger.
The lavender, yellow and green quilt named, ‘Coming Up Daisies? will be raffled off at 7 p.m. on December 11 at the Orion Township library.
Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased there.
‘This is the 20th year we have made a quilt to benefit the Friends of the Library,? said Plattenberger.
Linda Sickles, the director of the Library, said she is very appreciative of the efforts the volunteers make every year.
‘Over the last 20 years, they have raised approximately $20,000,? said Sickles.
The volunteers thought they might take a year off this year, however Plattenberger said volunteer Cindy Walters donated the quilt top so they handquilted the rest.
‘When all of us get together, we talk about our families and everything that is going on in our lives,? said Plattenberger.
‘Even though times are tough right now, purchasing a few tickets at $1 each makes it affordable for everyone to buy a few tickets,? said Plattenberger.
There is a saying amongst the women in this quilting bee.
‘If you prick your finger, just don’t bleed on the quilt,? said Plattenberger.
Raffle tickets can be purchased at the library. For more information, please call the library – 248-693-3000.
