Central Michigan University offers a full-ride scholarship to high school journalism students.
CMU’s 2009 Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship provides four years of full tuition, about $80,000, and supplementary awards for room and board.
It is named for 1960 alumnus and Saginaw native Lem Tucker, who worked for all three major television networks and earned two Emmy awards. The scholarship is awarded to a high school journalist who demonstrates leadership, journalistic skills and a commitment to promoting minority excellence in the media.
Applicants must complete an official application; write an essay and cover letter; and provide a letter of reference, samples of journalistic work, and academic transcripts and college-entrance test scores.
Applicants must apply for admission to CMU before applying for the scholarship. Complete instructions and scholarship application are online at www.ccfa.cmich.edu/ltucker/scholarship.html.
