Lady Cagers took to the court for their first game of the season last week.
The Wolves put up a defensive wall in the middle of the game making it hard for Waterford Mott to score, but the Corsairs broke through in the fourth quarter for the win, 52-47.
‘We definitely have a very young, inexperienced team this year,? said Clarkston coach Tim Wasilk.
‘It’s going to take us some time to come together. We tried to focus on the positives tonight and look at the things we did right. Our girls did some nice things defensively. I was happy with those things. We got a couple steals with our press and it got us going in the right direction.?
The Wolves gained possession at the beginning of the game.
The referee threw the ball into the air and Jena Manilla tapped it away from Mott and towards her teammates.
But it was Mott that got on the scoreboard first and led the game going into the second half of the game.
The girls came back to the court determined to block Mott after the half-time break.
The Wolves began the third quarter five points behind, 27-22.
Kaleigh Kenny got the girls closer in score with two free throws. Kayla Brimacombe tied the score with a field goal. Mott couldn’t find a way past the Wolves? defense and only scored three baskets.
Mott found their way back into the lead in the last eight minutes and widened the score.
‘Clarkston has a good defense,? said Mott coach Jessica Cox. ‘They have good players that definitely made it tough on my girls. They found out who our shooters were and shut them down for a little while.?
Clarkston’s leading scorers against Mott were Kenny, 17, Taylor Hasselbach, 10, and Brimacombe with six points.
Hasselbach and Brimacombe each scored two field goals.
Mott’s leading scorers were Brianna McNeary, 14, and Scarlett Simancek, 12.
JV won their game against Mott, 34-23.
The girls hosted Davison on Tuesday and will play rivals Lake Orion next Tuesday.
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
‘We realize it’s going to take time to get to where we need to be. It’s part of the effort the girls gave,? said Wasilk.
‘Taking care of the basketball will be our main focus.?
