Webkinz fans will enjoy this semester’s Dolphin Splash, to be published next week in The Clarkston News.
“We’ll have a couple of stories on them,” said Ann Marie McMichael, parent volunteer at Springfield Plains Elementary School, head of the school Journalism Club.
The furry, Internet-based creatures join interviews with teachers and students, stories on Clarkston Chiefs, field trips, and other school topics, cartoons, and photographs, all created by students in grades 3-5.
“They were fantastic,” McMichael said. “The kids came up with all the story ideas. It was a lot of work.”
The club coordinates with Clarkston News Assistant Publisher Don Rush for community-wide publication.
“Don is so creative ? he helps with the titles and layout,” McMichael said. “He’s very good.”
The News also donated hundreds of newspapers to the club, in its fifth year, she said.
“They give kids a chance to learn to read newspapers, and inspires them to join the club,” she said.
Club members publish Dolphin Splash ? the school mascot is a dolphin ? twice a year, in the middle and at the end of the school year.
The students meet for about an hour a week to learn interviewing, writing, illustration, photography and other newspaper skills.
