The girls? varsity basketball team lost a hard fought battle on Thursday Feb. 5 against Pontiac Northern.
Pontiac Northern is the only team the girls have not defeated yet this season and the Dragons were looking to increase the margin of games they were ahead in the OAA Red Division.
Within the first few minutes, the Lady Dragons were down, 7-0.
The girls fought back hard in the second quarter, reducing Northern’s lead to two points.
In the third quarter, Northern outscored Lake Orion 8-2 bringing their lead to 10 points. The Huskies had a 4-6 point run at the start of the fourth quarter, causing the Dragons to ‘up the ante.?
The final score was 59-45 in favor of the Huskies, which was also the lady Dragons? lowest score of the season.
‘We shot 44 percent, which may be good, but they shot more,? said Coach Steve Roberts. ‘Their defense was aggressive and it was a tough game, but it’s a matter of seeing what we make of this setback.?
Courtney Zott put up 11 points followed by Brittney Hopkins with 6. The leading scorer of the game was Bethany Watterworth scoring 26 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Watterworth was honored before the start of the game for reaching the 1,000-point mark of her career. By the end of the game she had 1,026 points.
Watterworth was also nominated by the McDonald’s in Lake Orion to be on their corporate All-American team. The team will be announced on Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
The next few games will be critical to how the Dragons? season turns out. Lake Orion, Northern and North Farmington are now in a three-way tie for first place with only two league losses in the OAA Red Division.
‘We really need to stay focused on what we want to accomplish. This way, we control our destiny,? Roberts added. ‘We are in a good situation, but with that win we could have been in a much better one.?
