Courtney Meharg considered a bunch of colleges for the fall and loved all of them.
‘But once I went to Ferris, it was kind of like everything just fell into place,” said the Clarkston High School senior. “I love the coach, I love the players. It just seemed right, right when I got there.?
Meharg signed a letter of intent, Feb. 18, to play soccer at Ferris State University.
Meharg plays outside midfield, and has been a varsity player at CHS since her freshman year.
She will major in marketing, her favorite in high school. She also enjoys culinary arts as a hobby when she isn’t playing soccer. She will receive a partial scholarship for her first two years.
She feels she will be able to compete with the older players at college.
‘I won’t be scared or whatever because I’m going to be 18 playing against 22-year- olds. It’s not going to be a factor for me, I don’t think. And I’m a really vocal player, and I can also take stuff really well. I’m not going to get down if someone tells me to do something. So I feel like I’m just a really good team player,? she said.
In a college game, Meharg said, speed picks up a lot from high school.
‘My speed and my touch are the two major things, and once you get those two things down, you’ll be good to go,? Meharg said.
Meharg was also looking at Siena Heights University. She liked the school, but it was a little small. When she got to FSU, she knew that was the right school immediately.
Pat Joni, Meharg’s father, said she seems ready for college.
‘It’s something she’s worked for her whole life. It’s kind of been her goal to go away to college and play soccer, and it’s kind of neat to see your kid’s dreams come true,? Joni said.
Joni liked the campus and is impressed with the coach.
