The girl’s varsity basketball team won by a mere point against North Farmington Tuesday, Feb. 17.
After Courtney Zott made a basket with only 8 seconds to go, LO was up by one, earning the win for the Dragons.
On Thursday, Feb. 19, the girls were off to a slow start, with an 8-8 tie with Rochester High School.
Lake Orion then experienced a mistfortune when Lady Dragon Maddie Gaggn experienced a fainting spell from athletic-induced asthma.
It was determined that dehydration contributed to the fainting, as well.
After a few short minutes, Maddie was awake, alert and responsive.
‘The injury had an emotional impact on everyone, when you see a player collapse so early in the game,? said Coach Steve Roberts.
Regardless, the Dragons were up 21-20 at the end of the half and continued to build on their lead, ending the third quarter with a score of 36-33.
Sarah Turnbull put up a much-needed 3-pointer, building Lake Orion’s lead to 6 points. The Dragons then forced the Rochester players to come out of their zone, forcing their coach to make a decision to switch to man-to-man defense.
Bethany Watterworth scored right at the start of the fourth quarter. She then made a pass to Zott, who made a basket bringing the lead to ten points. As the game came to a close, Lake Orion took the win with a final score of 55-41.
The Dragon’s scoring was very balanced. Watterworth had 14 points, followed by Zott with ten points. Kate Dalrymple had nine points, Alexis Haan scored eight, Brittany Hopkins added seven, followed by Sarah Turnbull with 5 and Hood closed out the scoring with two points.
Because of Pontiac Northern’s loss to Southfield Lathrup, these two wins put the Dragons right in first place in the league.
Lake Orion is only one game ahead of Northern and has two regular season games to go.
The Dragons do not play Northern again, so it is a head-to-head battle for the win.
‘We’re looking to clench an outright championship,? added Roberts. ‘Northern can’t catch us. We control our destiny.?
The Lady Dragons close out their season at home on Friday against West Bloomfield. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
Orion then heads to districts on March 2, beginning at 7 p.m. at Clarkson High School.
