The Lady Dragons pushed their way to a victory last Friday when they won the Class A District Championship trophy.
With a final score of 54-45 the girl’s varsity basketball team took away Waterford Mott’s chance at a regional title.
‘Our kids stepped up and shut them down,? said Coach Steve Roberts. ‘We battled hard and were able to get the victory.?
According to Roberts, Mott’s strategy was to shoot as many three pointers as they could against the Dragon’s zone defense.
The Corsairs hit six three’s right at the start of the clock.
They were then put to a stop when the Lady Dragon’s switched to man-to-man defense.
‘They had never seen us play man-to-man and they didn’t think we could do it,? Roberts added.
Mott was ahead at the end of the first quarter but Lake Orion started out strong right at the start of the half.
‘We spaced the floor and allowed opportunities to attack the basket,? said Roberts.
With a strong drive to the basket from Alexis Haan the Dragons took the lead.
Outscoring Mott 28-14 in the second half of the game the girl’s earned the title district champ’s.
Senior Bethany Watterworth scored the last 15 straight points in the 4th quarter.
With a total of 33 points and 9 rebounds Watterworth had one of the best 10 minute stretches of game played in Lake Orion’s recent history.
‘The girl’s are really excited to be participating in the regional tournament,? Roberts said. ‘Personally it’s a rush to be a part of March Madness because it is a first for us. As the games advance, it becomes more and more challenging.?
If the ladies defeat their next two opponents they will be titled regional champions and advance onto the state quarter finals on Thursday.
‘The best team is the team that does the best on game night,? added Roberts. ‘Once you’re at this level, it’s anyone’s game and we have as good a shot as anyone.?
