‘The No-Frills Revue?

Atlas Twp.- A little bit of everything? that is what audiences will see and hear in ‘The No-Frills Revue,? set to take the stage at 7 p.m., April 2-4 and 2:30 p.m., April 5 at the Raymond C. Green Center for the Performing Arts, 8029 S. Gale Road.
The musical parodies famous musicals including ‘Annie,? ‘Sweeney Todd,? ‘Fiddler on the Roof,? and ‘West Side Story.?
‘It’s similar to song and dance shows you might equate with Vegas,? said Goodrich High School Theatre Director Steve Mitchell. ‘It’s not big flashy stuff, but it borders on vaudeville. We make fun of different things and bring humor to more current events.?
There is no storyline or plot to ‘The No-Frills Revue,? explains Mitchell, rather, it is full of small scenes and vignettes that are disconnected. Those scenes include one about waiting in line at the grocery store, as well as a parody about Abbott and Costello’s skit, ‘Who’s on first??
In the skit, Chan Mitchell, a GHS junior, plays ‘Louise Costello.? She also has a part as a gossip columnist.
‘I love my parts because they give me the ability to get out of the box and work on going into other characters,? she said. ‘I think people will like this show because it’s a quick, fun comedy and there is nothing complicated. It’s easy for all ages to understand.?
The ensemble cast of 27 students features parodies of Tony and Maria in ‘West Side Story,? Tevye from ‘Fiddler on the Roof? and Daddy Warbucks from ‘Annie.?
Paul Docter, a GHS sophomore, plays the latter and is also part of the chorus.
‘I think the audience will like ‘The No-Frills Revue? because it’s almost like ‘Saturday Night Live,?? he said. ‘You’ll be laughing throughout.?
There are 14 musical numbers in ‘The No-Frills Revue,? including ‘Stools,? ‘Brand-New Hammer,? ‘In the Quiet of Your Arms,? ‘My Reunion Prayer,? and ‘Someone’s Got to Do It.?
‘There is a lot of choreography, including a big tap number, but we’re still trying to keep it simple,? said Mitchell.
Simple was necessary, particularly when the show had to be put together in under six weeks after an original plan to perform ‘The Robber Bridegroom? was scrapped due to it being a difficult challenge in voice range with the current talent.
‘We did this show in half the time,? said Mitchell. ‘It was really stressful, but it will be a good fun show that the audience will really enjoy. It changes gears a lot.?
Tickets for ‘The No-Frills Revue? are $7 and can be purchased at the door, or through advance reservations by calling 810-591-2220.
