Parents who host lose the most

Dear Lake Orion parents/guardians,

Another fantastic school year of academics, activities, sports and social events in LO is quickly coming to an end. As the summer draws nearer, there will be many opportunities for students to celebrate, socialize and have fun.
We’ve teamed up with the North Oakland Community Coalition to ask for everyone’s help in making the prom and graduation season a safe and healthy one for all students. As part of the ‘Parents who hose lose the most – don’t be a party to teenage drinking? campaign, we urge you to join us in strongly supporting zero-tolerance for illegal drug use and underage drinking.
Here’s what you can to:
1) keep an open line of communication and be firm in ‘no alcohol before 21?
2) never host or provide alcohol to anyong under 21 – it’s illegal and unhealthy
3) don’t allow your student to host or attend a party that is unsupervised
4) as an adult role model, remember if you drink, consider making low-risk decisions
5) talk to your student about how to say ‘no? to risky situations
6) tell your student that they can call you at any time they find themselves in a risky situation, no questions asked
7) team up and talk with other parents
8) provide opportunities for your student to host safe, alcohol-free parties or activities
9) if you suspect your student has an alcohol or drug problem, see help by contacting school counseling or the local Youth Assistance Office
10) remember to let your student know you love them and care about their safety
11) report illegal drug use and underage drinking to the village police department at 248-693-8321 or county sheriff’s substation at 248-858-4950.
All of us have the opportunity and responsibility to help our students reach their full potential. As a parent or guardian, you can do your part to make that happen. Together we can make a positive difference for our youth.

Sincerely,

Jerry Narsh, Chief of Police
Todd Dunckley, LOHS Principal
Hon. Lisa Asadoorian, 52nd District Judge
