Local stylist looks to make her mark in Big Apple

Look out George and Weezy because Theadora ‘Teddi? Guzman is movin? on up to the east side ? of the country.
On June 1, the 2003 Oxford High graduate will begin her job as an assistant to renowned hair stylist/photographer Philip Pelusi at his haute salon Tela Design Studio in heart of New York City’s meat packing district.
‘I was really surprised they picked me,? said Guzman, who will turn 24 in May.
As one of Pelusi’s assistants, she will be doing everything from coloring and blow-drying clients? hair to planning events and archiving his photography work.
Guzman was offered the job after spending two-and-a-half years working as a product educator (or ‘image-maker consultant?) for Pelusi’s line of hair care products.
She was offered this new position because she’s young, responsible, a fast-learner and possessed the necessary technical skills.
Guzman’s certainly no stranger to hair salons.
She practically grew up in her mother’s place, Sabrina’s Salon in Oxford, which, after 12 years in business, recently merged with Fancy Feet & Fingers to form Downtown Salon.
Guzman started working in her mother’s downtown Oxford salon when she was 17 years old. Her on-the-job training there helped her earn her cosmetology license.
Even though she has a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Oakland University, Guzman realized there were more opportunities for her in the salon business.
Plus, she liked the fact that the hair styling industry gave her the chance to talk to people all day long and make them feel good about themselves.
