Varsity Boys Golf team traveled to Bay City Western Invitational, May 4, where the Wolves finished fourth out of 17 teams.
‘We took a big step forward this week,? said coach Mark Wiegand.
Senior Tommy Ronk and junior Taylor Walker tied for the Tournament Low Medalist with two-over-par 74s. The Wolves finished with a team score of 316, five shots back of the winning score.
‘Tommy and Taylor played outstanding, we just couldn’t put anything else with them on that day,? Weigand said. ? Taylor is really coming into his own and becoming a consistently low scorer.?
Tuesday, Clarkston hosted the Falcons of Rochester at Oakhurst Golf Club. In a close match, the Wolves shot 160 to beat Rochester by four.
The top four scores for Clarkston were: Tommy Ronk 37, Nick Robeson 39, Chad Wotton 42, and Ryan Milliken 42. The win moves the team league match record to 3-0.
‘It’s nice that we’re starting to see some of our younger players step up and give Tommy and Taylor some support,? Wiegand said.
On Wednesday, Boulder Pointe hosted the OAA Red Division Tournament, where the Wolves surprised the rest of the league by capturing the tournament by seven shots.
‘We’ve been talking about competing, and I think it’s starting to sink in that just because we’re young doesn’t mean we can’t contend,? he said. ‘I’m very happy with our progress so far. Tommy and Taylor again led the way for us with 77s, while Nick Robeson’s 79 and Ryan Milliken’s 82 rounded out the win.?
Robeson had a good week both against Rochester and in the OAA Tournament, and Milliken is starting to become much more consistent, Wiegand said.
‘Both of their scores counted in all 3 events this week and were critical to our success,? he said. ‘We still have control of our own destiny in the league right now, so we couldn’t ask for more. Now we need someone from our other 4 players to step up and contend more consistently.?
This week’s schedule includes a Monday match vs. Troy at Sanctuary Lake, Wednesday’s Oakland County Tournament at Pontiac Country Club, a Thursday match vs. Rochester Adams at Oakhurst, and Friday at the East Lansing Spring Classic, 36 holes, at Michigan State’s Forest Akers.
‘This is a big week with two tough matches and two great tournaments, so we’ll just hope to keep seeing them improve and enjoy the competition,? he said. ‘They’re a great group to be around.?
