Joshua Renner
Joshua Renner has been awarded a Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Energy, as announced by the Krell Institute on May 11.
The Department of Energy Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship is a highly competitive program initiated and funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration. First awarded in 2006, the fellowship has supported a total of 14 students at six universities. Fellowships are granted annually and fund the education of doctoral students whose course of study focuses on areas of interest to stewardship science, including properties of materials under extreme conditions and hydrodynamics, high-energy-density physics, or low-energy nuclear science.
Renner joins a group of five first-year fellows in 2009, bringing the total number of current DOE NNSA SSGF program participants to 19 students in seven states. As part of the program, these individuals are afforded benefits including a yearly stipend, full payment of university tuition and required fees (during the appointment period), and an annual academic and conference travel allowance. In return, they must complete a comprehensive program of study and are also required to complete a three-month practicum at one of four Department of Energy national defense laboratories.
Renner, a 2005 graduate of Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta, Ga., will pursue a doctoral degree in the field of nuclear physics at the University of California, Berkeley, beginning in the fall. He is the son of Christine and Philip Renner of Groveland Township.
