Clarkston Boys Varsity Golf team hosted Rochester Adams, May 14, at Oakhurst in a battle for the lead in the OAA Red Division.
The final tally was Clarkston 160 and Adams 160, but Adams came away with the victory when the tiebreaker went to the fifth man. A week later at Districts, May 21, Clarkston qualified to move onto Regionals by one stroke.
‘I think they’re beginning to understand how important each player and each shot is,? said coach Mark Wiegand. ‘It’s not just about our top two or three players. It takes all of them competing to successfully finish the goals.?
With high winds and wet roughs at Heather Highlands, scores were higher than in past years, Wiegand said.
Tommy Ronk finished tied for second overall with 77, and the younger Wolves followed his lead with Taylor Walker and Andrew Lange posting 85s, and Nick Robeson and Chad Wotton each with 87.
‘Tommy Ronk continues to lead our team with his consistently low scores,? Wiegand said. ‘Freshmen Andrew Lange has also been coming up huge for us since being moved up to Varsity late this year.?
Lange played in three events and his score has been counted each time.
‘It’s great to see the young guys playing, getting experience, and pushing the upperclassmen,? Wiegand said.
The Wolves don’t have to travel far this week as both the final OAA Red Division Tournament on Tuesday and Regionals on Thursday are at Boulder Pointe in Oxford.
‘The boys played well at Boulder Pointe earlier this season at the first OAA Tournament,? he said. ‘I’m hoping that gives them the confidence to go into this week knowing that they can compete with the better teams.?
