Groveland Twp.-For more than a quarter century the Avenue of Flags displayed at the Ortonville Cemetery each Memorial Day has been a visible tribute to those individuals who served the United States in the past, and presently.
The 544 flags are placed alphabetically along the roadway by volunteers, on Sunday morning prior to Memorial Day. The flags are guarded by Ortonville Boy Scout Troop #139 who camp near the cemetery until the flags are taken down following Memorial Day services on Monday.
Yet, despite the security, regiment and diligence associated with the yearly tribute, a flag was stolen sometime on Monday afternoon, reported Marvin Featherston, a WWII veteran and Avenue of Flags volunteer.
‘We just want the flag back,? said Featherston. ‘Just return the flag and name tag to the garage in the cemetery, no questions asked. If they really need a flag we’ll be happy to buy them one.?
The Avenue of Flags concept was spearheaded by resident Marilyn Featherston and Congressman Dale Kildee in 1983. The flags are now obtained from U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers. The display grew from 16 to 275 by 1991 until a fire completely destroyed the garage and the flags stored inside. The community rallied and raised $3,400 to replace the flags and poles.
