Sheriff talks in Springfield

No personnel cuts are planned for Springfield Township’s 11-deputy substation, said township Supervisor Mike Trout. The county is offering an idea to save money, though.
Under current contract, the township is guaranteed a certain number of officers on the road at all times. If an officer calls in sick or goes on vacation, the sheriff’s office must send a substitute. Under a “no fill” contract, the county would not be obligated to fill in, Trout said.
‘It could save some money ? there are a lot of variables,? Trout said. ‘There are new board members including myself on the board who haven’t received this information before. It will be educational.?
The no-fill contract would save about $14,000 per deputy per year, said Dale Cunningham, business manager for Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in a presentation to Springfield Township Board, Nov. 12.
Tim Willis, substation commander, would be responsible for managing personnel and maintaining road coverage. If adopted, the township would have 90 days during which it could change its mind. The township board voted unanimously to table the contract.
