Michigan Recreation and Park Association Foundation established a memorial fund to honor former Independence Township Park and Recreation Director Tim Doyle, who lost a nine-year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease this past October.
‘Tim Doyle’s vision is the reason we are able to enjoy recreation in Independence Township today,” said Mike Turk, current Parks and Recreation director. “When you drive into Clintonwood Park you are able to receive the benefits of what he envisioned for our community.”
Doyle served as department director for Independence Township, board member and later commissioner of the Metro Detroit Amateur Softball Association, and as president of the Michigan Recreation and Park Association. He is remembered for his commitment to parks and recreation, health and wellness, the outdoors and a love of children.
“Tim taught me many things about parks and recreation, but what I inherited most from him was his caring nature for our residents,” Turk said. “I am honored to have had him as a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. Sitting in the chair he created, I can only hope that I can carry on his legacy. I will remember him forever.?
The Timothy J. Doyle Memorial Fund will provide matching grants for local community efforts to purchase adaptive equipment, build recreation venues and provide accessible programs for all ages and abilities throughout Michigan.
