School board tables traffic light decision

Members of the Oxford Schools Board of Education showed an overall displeasure at flagging money for a new traffic signal at the intersection of East Burdick and Glaspie (North Oxford and Lakeville respectively in Oxford Township); however, the trustees voted unanimously to table the issue until further information is available.
The idea was presented by Assistant Superintendent Ron Franey. He requested board approval for funds matching whatever the township decides to contribute, up to $7,500. The new traffic signal was estimated to cost between $50,000 and $60,000.
“I feel we should wait to see who else comes forward with what kind of funding so that we know an exact amount we’re being asked to contribute,” said Trustee Ronald Mutch, who feels the schools should hold some responsibility for the traffic congestion in the area.
Trustees Colleen Schultz, Judy Kubina, Lee Barclay and board president Ron Etherton were strongly against the idea. Trustee Patti Smith was not in attendance.
“I don’t think we should do it right now,” said Schultz. “I just don’t think we should spend the money right now with budgets the way they are.”
“I really do think it’s a little premature to commit that kind of money at this time,” agreed Etherton.
The board agreed to revisit the issue when more information becomes available.
