Dear editor,
This letter is submitted to let the Orion community know about a potentially threatening situation that occurred in our subdivision on Friday, March 12. At approximately 8 p.m., our doorbell rang. It was very dark out that night.
When we answered the door, a young African man said that he was a representative of Kirby Vacuum. This man was well dressed and well spoken. When we said we were not interested in a vacuum, the young man left.
This young man did NOT have a solicitor license. The next night, which was Saturday, March 13, a series of smash and grab robberies occurred on our street. (You may have seen the story on the front page of the The Lake Orion Review. We called Kirby Vacuum and they confirmed they did NOT have anyone in our neighborhood selling vacuums on March 12.
We are not certain that the two incidents are connected, but they do raise concern.
Please help enforce the Peddlers and Solicitors Regulation (ordinance 95-4) that our township has in place. It states, ‘No person shall peddle or solicit within the Township without first obtaining a license therefore…? The ordinance also states, ‘the applicant must request a background check from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and provide such result to the Township Clerk along with the application for license under this Ordinance.?
After the license is approved by our clerk, the solicitor will be given a license with photograph of the shall display a photograph of the applicant being at least two inches by two inches, and shall show the head and shoulders of the applicant in a clear and distinguishing manner.
Please be safe and do not open your door to anyone who is not willing to show you their solicitor license. Please report any solicitor without a license to the non emergency department of your local police department.
A Keatington resident
