‘Next Chapter’

There’s new book club in town.
The Orion Township Public Library is offering the Next Chapter Book Club, a group for adults with developmental disabilities.
Currently, the club consists of eight members, along with trained facilitator and librarian, Deb Motley.
‘We have to keep the groups small, but it’s such a positive experience that we would love to drum up support so additional groups can be added,? Motley said.
The book club, Motley explained, focuses on three important points: literacy, social connectedness and community inclusion.
These are important parts of everyone’s life, she noted, and are especially meaningful to adults with developmental disabilities.
So far, the group has finished one book, Because of Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.
“Each person gets a chance to read passages from the book,” said Motley. “They love to help each other out and discuss what is going on in the book and what it means to them.”
The meetings, held at Poppyseed Deli instead of the library so members can interact within their community, take place at the downtown Lake Orion restaurant every Tuesday at 10 a.m, The group reads and discusses a book while also enjoying Poppyseed’s food and drinks.
Motley attended facilitator training put on by the Ohio State University Nisonger Center on Jan. 12.
Both the training and book club are sponsored by the library’s Outreach department and the Orion-Oxford Kiwanis.
The Orion Township Public Library is located at 825 Joslyn Road, Lake Orion MI 48362.
