Saturday, March 20, 67 teams of fifth-graders gathered at Lake Orion’s CERC building for the Orion Township Library’s 2010 Battle of the Books.
Students read 20 books over four months and answered the 50 hardest questions the librarians could write in a quiz-show-style competition.
The teams designed their own uniforms and gave themselves names like Protect Your Cheeks, Grandma’s Coming and The Nerdy, Novel-Reading, Neon Know-It-Alls.
At the end of the battle, two teams tied for first place with a score of 96: The Earthlings from Reading Space and The Green Alien Pirates who Eat Pomegranates. In a tie-breaker held just before the Battle Awards Ceremony, Monday, March 22 in the Lake Orion High School Auditorium, The Earthlings from Reading Space pulled ahead to win the competition.
All participants were honored at the awards ceremony and had the chance to meet Sue Stauffacher, the author of Donuthead, a favorite Battle book. The children’s librarians from the Orion Township Library were thrilled with the record-breaking turnout and congratulate all the students and coaches who took on the challenge.
