Don’t worry: fireworks planned for the Fourth of July weekend are scheduled to explode over Lake Orion as usual, with this year’s display blasting off at dusk Saturday, July 3.
‘The fireworks over Lake Orion are completely separate from the Jubilee,? said Tina Peterson, vice president of event marketing for the Lake Orion Fireworks Association. ‘We’ve always had it in conjunction with the Lions event in downtown Lake Orion, but we’re not part of their event and they’re not part of ours.?
While funding is still a formidible issue Peterson said the association is hoping to repeat the scale of the 2009 display.
‘We try to add a little every year,? she said.
But while the local economy remains in a wilt, the association could use some volunteers to help with tasks like staffing fundraisers, printing and distributing fliers and helping with mailings.
Carl Cyrowski, association president, said ‘an hour here, an hour there,? instead of huge time committments is all the group is asking for.
Cash donations, Peterson added, are especially needed.
About $25,000 ought to cover this year’s display, said Cyrowski.
‘We don’t want to cut corners after last year’s show,? he noted. ‘We need everyone’s support to have the same — or better — quality show. We have one of the best in Michigan.?
Those wishing to volunteer can call leave a message at 248-393-0600. Donations can be sent to the Lake Orion Fireworks Association, 1520 S. Lapeer Road, Suite 104, Lake Orion, MI 48360.
Buffalo Wild Wings will host a brunch, May 16, to benefit the fireworks association. Goodies like omlettes, made to order, and a chocolate fountain will be featured from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
All proceeds will go to the association, with supplies, food and labor being donated.
The cost to crunch and munch on brunch is a $12 donation for adults and $6 for children.
