“Do what we do.”
That is what’s stamped on the back of the orange shirts worn by the girls? soccer team.
And whatever they do, it must be working. They currently have a record of 9-2. Out of the nine games won, eight of them were shut-outs.
Last year, the varsity girls made it to regionals, after wining districts.
‘We are progressing from a top team [last year] to continuing being a top team,? said Ken Snage, head coach.
At the moment, the team is considered a “ranked team.” And that is saying something, considering the girls are playing in the toughest league in the state, with some good competition.
This honor feeds the athletes, and rewards them for their time and effort, says Snage.
Even though the girls are winning, the “fit” is not right yet. That is Coach Snage’s interpretation of the team.
‘I have different kids doing different things. And some kids doing the same things. It is a little bit of a process,? he said.
According to Snage, it takes about two to three months for new girls on varsity to “get the hang of things.”
On the other hand, he has seniors who will have played twenty to thirty varsity games by the end of their senior year. To combat this, Snage tunes his practice so the girls learn discipline and give a maximum effort.
‘If you don’t practice it, your not going to have it during a game,? he said.
Leadership is also something that Snage stressed. This year, he has ten seniors, three of them already signed to college teams.
‘I could write a story just about the senior class. Every time they are stellar. They give me everything,? said Snage.
Soccer includes so many variables, and you have to know how to handle those moments. That’s what leadership really is, noted Snage.
The varsity team’s captains, Julianne Boyle and Hailey Redd, are two that can carry the team, comments their coach. Both of them have been signed to college teams.
This year, the coach sat down with all of his seniors and together planned out their goals. Some of them included to be a ranked team (which they have already accomplished), and to get their picture in the high school’s athletic hallway.
As for the season, Snage hopes to make it as far as they can go.
