Spring cleaning, Gary Scott of Independence Township found an old Clarkston News.
It’s 71 years old, so he thought it deserved more than the recycle bin.
‘I thought I’d bring it in when paying my bill (for subscription),? said Scott, a long-time reader of the paper.
He had the paper for about 15 years, given to him by a neighbor, Percy Lowery, who was getting rid of some old books.
‘It was folded up inside an old atlas,? Scott said.
The Aug. 18, 1939, paper featured a Main Street fire, which destroyed the Sloat Building next to 5 S. Main Street, home of The Clarkston News.
‘It’s interesting ? they had a big fire,? Scott said. ‘I liked the prices at the market, too.?
A backpage ad for Barnard’s Food Market advertised lamb for 23 cents a pound, spring chicken for 25 cents a pound, and 2.5 pounds of flour for 59 cents.
