I was dismayed to read what I consider the undue harassment of school boardmember Tiffany Weber-Phillips in The Lake Orion Review last week.? It seems that one community member has adopted a practice we have in the past often deplored in the board itself.? I’m referring to honoring the letter of the law, rather than its spirit.
The spirit of the residency law is to ensure that boardmembers have a real commitment to the school district in which they serve.? Ms. Weber-Phillips has shown a commitment to our school district by volunteering hours of her time to such programs as the Stadium Drive ‘Reflections? (a national PTA art competition program) and fundraising efforts for the Lake Orion Education Association.?
She was also the only board member to vote to save our township thousands of dollars by putting the school board elections on the November general election ballots rather than holding special elections in May.
I don’t think it’s necessary that we delve too deeply into the personal reasons why her family owns houses in both Oxford and Lake Orion.?
Her kids go to Lake Orion schools, and she’s been an asset to our school district.? I don’t care if some people see her Lake Orion home as a ‘summer home? or cottage.? Let’s face it, if it’s on Park Island, you can be assured she’s contributing her share of taxes to Lake Orion!
