The former lumberyard in downtown Davisburg is set to be cleared of all structures.
“The structure is ready to collapse ? I’m glad we took it over,” said Springfield Township Clerk Laura Moreau. “It’s in everyone’s best interest.”
The Township Board contracted with Rogers Excavating of Springfield Township to demolish all four buildings at the site, Broadway and Andersonville roads, and remove foundations and concrete pads, cost not to exceed $12,000.
“Make it a clean slate, remove everything so it will be safe,” said township Supervisor Mike Trout. “That’s the best approach, with the most flexibility.”
The township is looking into a new community septic system at the location, with a preliminary design this fall, Trout said.
“A new septic system would allow downtown businesses access to a fully functional system, improving their business,” he said.
The system, possibly funded by a special assessment, would include collection pipes, treatment system, and septic field, he said.
“There are a lot of different types of treatment system ? we’re looking at several,” he said. “We’re in the preliminary phase, and aren’t looking to move fast. The system’s failing, though, so the sooner we do it, the better off we’ll be.”
The township purchased the 3.3 acre property this past March for $125,000.
