This year marks the fifth annual Mission Possible for Lake Orion Church of Christ. The home-based mission provides church members and other volunteers the opportunity to complete a church mission without the traveling expenses.
‘It is a home-based mission,? said Randy McClure, a member of the Lake Orion Church of Christ and co-organizer of the mission. ‘We originally got the idea after somebody asked ‘Why do we have to go to Panama to do a mission???
The volunteers will stay, eat, and sleep together Aug. 1-7.
Last year they recorded more than 100 people contributing in some form, whether financial or labor, and some 80 full-time participants.
‘We have a large demographic of volunteers, from groups of teens to entire families,? said McClure.
During the day, McClure explained that the group is split up to tackle different projects around the Lake Orion/Oxford Area.
The church is looking for more jobs to take on this year.
‘We’re not full with projects yet,? said McClure.
The group is focusing on helping the elderly and those who physically can’t do odd jobs, as well as the financially unstable. Current jobs include light maintenance on homes, yard work, small carpentry projects as well as minor plumbing.
However McClure said ‘We can’t tackle every job, but we at least look at everything.?
‘We’re trying to let the community know that the church cares,? he said.
People who take advantage of the volunteers? help are not under any obligation to then go to church.
‘We have been blessed, and we are seeking to share the blessing,? McClure said. ‘We will serve [people] in any way we can. We can also just drop by for a visit or run errands.?
Currently the church is looking for projects, preferably yard work, clean up, or cleaning of garages and attics. Anyone with prospective projects can call the church at 248-693-7242. Volunteers and donors of materials or funds may also call the number above.
