Results of the Michigan Press Association 2010 Better Newspaper Contest are in, and Clarkston News has nine more awards for its wall.
In Design, the News won third place, ‘consistent week to week,? said judges.
In Editorial Writing, ‘good, strong editorials? won the paper third place. Editorial pages earned a second place nod ? judges ‘especially liked the editorial ‘Defining Opinion,?? which explained the difference between editorials, columns, and letters to the editor.
In News Photo, editor Phil Custodio was awarded first place for the photo ‘Bike Rider Still Hospitalized,? in which a local boy was critically injured when he was hit by a truck on M-15.
‘The best of the true ‘news? photos submitted for this category,? said judges. ‘This captures the horror of the news story: a boy on his bike hit by a tanker!?
Sports writer Wendi Reardon earned three first-place awards, including a first place in Sports Writing for her story ‘Cougars Caged?
‘Reardon immediately brought me into the game. Great job using play-by-plays,? said judges.
She was also recognized for Sports Column, ‘easy reading, likable from the start,? and Sports Feature for ‘Wolves Fight Cancer,? covering Clarkston High School’s Football for a Cure program.
‘Great story. They are playing for a good cause,? judges said.
Clarkston News? Millstream section earned third place in Lifestyle Section ? ‘good stories ? interesting.?
The annual Progress special section earned a third place award, ‘impressive product. Good articles and good use of photos.?
Members of Minnesota Newspaper Association reviewed 3,341 entries submitted by 126 Michigan newspapers.
