Hawkins makes all-state team

Goodrich senior Cody Hawkins has proved himself to be a quick learner.
Hawkins, in his first full year on the Goodrich powerlifting team, made the all-state powerlifting team by placing third in the 165-lb weight class at the Michigan High School Powerlifting Association championship meet March 15 at Muskegon High School.
He squatted 435 lbs., bench-pressed 275 lbs. and dead-lifted 425 lbs. for a combined total of 1,135 lbs.
The third place finish was somewhat of an adjustment, though, for Hawkins, who had won all the previous meets he took part in this season.
“I was a little disappointed, because I hoped I would have done better, but I was still excited,” he said.
He said he took part in one powerlifting meet last year, but his time during the winter season was primarily occuped with the Goodrich hockey team.
Hawkins is the son of Gary and Diane Hawkins of Goodrich, and has a younger brother, Max, a freshman at Goodrich High School.
He will be attending Michigan State University next year and hopes to become a chiropractor. He hopes to lift on a recreational basis while at MSU.
Although he was the only Goodrich varsity powerlifter to make the all-state team, six junior varsity powerlifters made the all-state team
Goodrich powerlifting coach Trevor Alward said competitors earn all-state powerlifting honors by placing in the top 10 at the state meet.
Here is a summary of how the six Goodrich junior varsity powerlifters fared at the state meet:
·Alan Easton (eighth grade, 220 lbs.) placed ninth in his weight class. He squatted 315 lbs., bench-pressed 235 lbs. and dead-lifted 350 lbs. for a total of 900 lbs.
