Dr. Thomas K. Stone of Clarkston is the winner of the 2008 Distinguished Professional Service Award, presented by the Michigan Counseling Association.
‘This is one of the most significant recognitions in my life and in my career as a counselor,? Stone said. ‘It’s a significant honor. I didn’t know if I would ever get it. It’s not given every year. It’s very special.?
The award honors and recognizes long-term outstanding service to the profession and association. Presentation was at the ssociation’s annual Fall Conference, Oct. 10-12 in Dearborn.
Stone has been an active counseling and organizational professional for about 40 years, and is still a certified trainer. He was a founder of the Michigan Community College Counselor Academy, charter member of American College Counseling Association, and named to the National Distinguished Service Registry: Counseling and Development.
He has held several leadership positions in MCA, including president and parliamentarian, and a national certified counselor, national certified career counselor, and Michigan licensed professional counselor.
‘I helped folks with problems they needed to discuss and work out,? he said. “I’ve had a wide variety of experiences. The teacher learns too. People are complex. Each of us needs to find our own strengths and weaknesses, and be clear on our priorities in life.
Stone served 10 years at Wayne State University and 25 at Oakland Community College, from which he retired in 1993. OCC named him a Distinguished Emeritus Professor.
Having lived in Clarkston for nearly 40 years, he served his community in a variety of ways, such as president of North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy for 10 years, and has received several community awards.
‘I’ve spent a lot of my life helping people in a variety of contexts, and I’ll continue to do so,? he said.

The DAISY Award, Diseases Attacking the Immune System, is a program of the DAISY Foundation. It was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura at the age of 33.
The DAISY Foundation funds research to help fight diseases of the immune system and supports patients and their families.
Additionally, Daugherty was recently commended for her medical expertise and care of a challenging patient in the hospital’s Critical Care Unit. This award is given monthly to outstanding nurses in more than 100 hospitals across the United States.

Freedom One Investment Advisors of Clarkston is dropping PIMCO’s Total Return Fund from its clients? 401K accounts.
‘We’re out of the derivatives game,? said Donald I. Gregg, Freedom One chief investment officer.
Derivatives are used in futures markets, in which investors earn large returns if the market is good, but lose if it’s not. PIMCO has been investing heavily in the fixed-income derivatives market, which has an estimated value of more than $300 trillion.
Especially with problems in the housing market, derivatives, along with the money PIMCO has invested in it, are too risky, Gregg said.
Instead, they recommend diversification, investing in Dodge and Cox Income and Loomis Sayles Bond funds, Western Asset Management, and ABN Amro. When completed, Freedom One will be removing more than $136 million from the PIMCO Total Return fund.
‘Our role as investment advisor is to be a watchdog,? Gregg said. ‘Just because (PIMCO) is the biggest name in town, doesn’t mean we have to go with it.?
Freedom One serves as the investment adviser and co-fiduciary to approximately 340 retirement 401(k) plans, as well as other institutional investors.

Oxford Bank offers the 2008 HAVEN Survivors calendar, ‘We Shall Be Heard,? for $14.95 through January.
All proceeds will benefit HAVEN, Help Against Violent Encounters Now, a non-profit group whose mission is to eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault through treatment and prevention services across Oakland County.
The calendars, underwritten by GM and Saturn, were created to raise funds, offer a voice to those who have suffered in silence, bring awareness to violence, dispel common misconceptions, and encourage people to seek help if needed.

Julie Keilitz, owner of Jules Yoga and Fitness of Clarkston, held a benefit Sept. 11 for Matthew McQuaid, 11, of Dublin, Ohio.
McQuaid goes to North Oakland Medical Center Euro-Peds, a specialized intensive therapy clinic in Pontiac for children and young adults who have cerebral palsy.
The yoga class, open house and raffle raised nearly $400 for the McQuaid family, who will be staying in hotels for Matthew’s next three-week treatment session in November, where he will be in therapy four hours per day, five days per week.

Maryann Northcote, formerly of Clarkston, was recently named Michigan Safety Conference Safety Professional of the Year for 2007.
Northcote, daughter of Fraser and Neva Northcote, began her career at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac in 1978. She moved to the corporate offices of Mercy Health Services in 1989, and continues to work for Trinity Health, the merger of Holy Cross and Mercy health systems.
She will be honored April 16 at the annual Michigan Safety Conference President’s Reception at the Amway Grand Hotel in Grand Rapids.

Michael J. Damone of Clarkston was appointed chairman of Lighthouse of Oakland County Board of Trustees.
Damone is the president of The Damone Group located in Troy. He has 20 years experience in real estate development/construction, including more than nine years in the assisted living industry.
He is a registered CPA in Arizona and Michigan, and holds a B.A. in accounting from Michigan State University.
His relationship with Lighthouse of Oakland County began in 1990. Since then, Damone has served on both the Lighthouse PATH board of directors and the Lighthouse of Oakland County board of trustees.

Kenneth Rogers is the new chairman of Clarkston Financial Corporation, the holding company for Clarkston State Bank.
Rogers, 67, has been a director of Clarkston State Bank since its inception in1999. He follows Edwin L. Adler as bank chairman.
Adler retired from active, daily involvement with the Bank Board, but remains chairman and CEO of the holding company, a title he has held since the bank’s founding.
Rogers is executive director of Automation Alley and the deputy county executive for Oakland County, where he oversees strategic planning and ongoing activities.
He was director of Oakland County’s community and economic development, where he was responsible for the planningand development division and the community development division.
He was also one of the founders of Oakland County’s Economic Development Corporation, served as a memberof the governor’s conference on small business, and was president of the Oakland County Chamber of Commerce.
He also served as a director for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital of Pontiac and the United Way of Oakland County.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in public administration and an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Central Michigan University.
