The Leader received a few phone calls Monday from folks who were under the impression that African American students attending Oxford Community Schools were given the day off Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day while everyone else was required to attend.
According to OHS Principal Mike Schweig, that’s not true.
He explained that due to the MLK holiday the Pontiac school buses that normally transport Schools of Choice students from the city to the Oxford district were not running.
As a result, there were Pontiac students who could not attend school Monday because they had no other means of transportation. These students were given excused absences.
Schweig noted there were some Pontiac students who attended classes.
‘We have students that are School of Choice who are attending today that were able to get rides, but not everybody did,? he said. ? CJC
