Mountaineers league champs in first year

In its first year, Everest Collegiate High School girls basketball team won its Sectional Championship for 2011.
The team of two juniors, three sophomores, and six freshman earned the trophy at Catholic League Tournament Championship finals at University of Detroit Mercy, Feb. 20.
With an 8-1 league record, the Everest Mountaineers tied with Sacred Heart Academy of Bloomfield Hills. Their larger margin of victory put them over the top.
Everest Collegiate junior forward Mary Smith was named to the league’s All Academic team; freshman guard Angelina Mastromatteo and freshman forward Mary Jo Allen were named to the All Catholic team; and junior forward Julianna Mastromatteo and freshman guard Megan Luttinen were named to the All League team.
Coach Erin Hearn was named ‘Coach of the Year? in the Intersectional Division.
The Mountaineers will play in Michigan High School Athletic Association Girls? State Tournament play-offs, March 2.
Founded in fall 2008, the school graduates its first class in spring 2012.
