Michigan weather sure has a funny way of throwing the spring sports season out of whack.
The April 4 ice storm effectively shut down life in the Brandon/Goodrich area. Government offices, schools and other local businesses (including our offices here at The Citizen) were without power, and needless to say, local sporting events were cancelled.
Well, it took some time, but electrical power was finally restored to the area, and the weather is coming back to where it should be for springtime. With that in mind, your fearless reporter is out and about in both districts, enjoying the warmer weather and capturing the local teams in action.
That’s a welcome sign that the cold weather is behind us for good and everyone can get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Maybe it’s my imagination, but the winter weather this season was the most intolerable in recent memory. Thank God it’s over (knock on wood ? the weather was sunny April 14-15, but it’s supposed to get colder by the end of the week).
Less than a month into my adventure as the sports editor, I’m still getting acquainted with the people that make the local sports scene go. However, the folks I’ve met so far have been nothing but supportive and have helped make my transition here that much easier.
The local teams are still in the early stages of their seasons, so it’s tough to get a gauge on how they’ll do the rest of the season.
However, there are plenty of other stories left to be written by teams from both schools. Now that the weather has made a turn for the better, it will be a treat to watch these stories unfold and chronicle them in these pages.
For now, though, the students are on spring break. The games are taking a back seat at this point as the players and coaches get some rest and relaxation and enjoy Easter with their families.
However, the action will resume this week, which means your fearless reporter will be around town, capturing the local teams in action. I’m looking forward to getting back into the high school groove.
