Students at Lakeville and Clear Lake elementaries celebrated Earth Day last week with a variety of activities designed to educate and raise awareness.
At Lakeville, the students learned how an oil spill affects waterfowl, how long it takes a variety of items to biodegrade in landfills and how solar energy works.
Over at Clear Lake, students learned about composting and the biodegradation process by dipping strips of old newspaper into a mixture of flour and water, then filling them with flower seeds. Students were encouraged to plant the packets at home.
‘Overall, the event went quite smoothly and just listening to the enthusiasm from the kids was very encouraging for the future,? said Renee Felix, co-coordinator of Clear Lake’s Green Team.
Clear Lake’s Green Team will be hosting an E-waste Recycling Day at the school on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is encouraged to drop off its e-waste in order to keep it out of landfills. ? CJC
