Along with touring downtown businesses for the annual History Walk on Friday, May 27, Clarkston Elementary second graders were seen in Depot Park planting flowers as part of an Academic Service Learning Project.
The class received $150 in grant money for the project. Bordines Nursery provided the students with information as well as flowers, plants, soil and pots for all the kids to keep the seedlings.
The project was a way for the students to learn about giving back to the community. Also a Davey Tree Removal representative talked to them about how he services the community and types of services they do.
‘The children planted pansies in all the entrance ways of Clarkston Elementary to ‘beautify? their community and this is our culminating effort to give back,? said second grade teacher Jody Gabbard.
‘We used the grant money to buy a stone header for the garden here at Depot Park that will say ‘Planted by Clarkston Elementary Second Graders 2011.??
Gabbard said the children also got their pictures taken while planting. They will be used in a nonfiction piece they’re writing on plants.
‘This photo will be their finale because they’ll get a printout of the research they typed up,? she said.
