Davisburg Elementary students took a walk to school, June 3, as part of International Walk to School Day.
‘Walk and Roll to School Day is the first activity for Davisburg’s Safe Routes to School Program,” said Nancy Humphreys, Girl Scout Troop 13075 leader who coordinated the event. ‘This is a great opportunity for Davisburg students, parents and teachers to demonstrate what we value.?
Led by the Girl Scouts, the students first picked up veteran flags, placed them in Davisburg Cemetery for Memorial Day, then walked a mile back to the school.
Safe Routes to School is an international movement to improve physical fitness and health, and reduce pollution and traffic.
‘Walking to school addresses many quality of life issues for students,? said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. ‘When students walk to school using safe routes, they receive the physical activity needed for good health. They also learn valuable pedestrian safety skills, lessons on the environment, and the importance of community.?
Physical fitness, a healthy environment and community involvement are already priorities for the school, Humphreys said.
Davisburg Elementary participates in The President’s Challenge each May for National Physical Fitness Month, holds several ‘walking field trips? in the community and has eearned the Michigan Green School designation.
