Matt Adair, 26, of Brandon wanted to know why a 19-year-old Independence Township woman wouldn’t talk to him when he hid in her bedroom Saturday night, attacked her, then shot her parents.
The victim told deputies she met Adair at the Salvation Army store in Oxford, where she works. He was there doing community service for a marijuana conviction.
He was interested in her, and sent her a couple texts that night, Sept. 3, to which she didn’t respond, she said.
She got home at about 2:40 a.m. after being out with friends and found him in her bedroom. He grabbed her by the throat, demanding to know why she wouldn’t respond to him.
According to police reports, when her parents rushed in to help, Adair shot them both with a stolen handgun.
After the shooting, he remained in the Whipple Lake house while the 19-year-old hid behind a dresser and called 911.
“It’s an unfortunate tragedy, a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” said Sgt. John Jacobson, Oakland County Sheriff’s Independence Township Substation who responded to the scene. “Deputies did a fantastic job responding to a potential active shooter situation, made the scene safe and brought in medical responders.”
The woman’s parents were transported to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, the father in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Her mother died at POH at 4:18 a.m.
Adair was found in the teen’s bedroom with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest.
Investigation continues.
