Lady Cagers were down four points and had 40 seconds to make a difference in their game at Avondale last Thursday.
Christina Jokisch scored a three-point shot to close the gap. They were able to get the ball back into their possession and Delaney Kenny scored on both her two free throw opportunities.
Avondale struck back making a baseline jump shot with six seconds to go.
Megan Hastings threw the ball to teammate Erin Davenport who scored with 1.6 seconds to go, ending the game with a 41-40 win for Clarkston.
“We had some luck on our side,” said Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach Tim Wasilk. “We played with a lot of toughness and we found a way to win. We found a way to make plays down the stretch. The game was really sloppy with a lot of fouls.”
Both teams never made it the lead more than four points and ended each quarter with a tie, going into the final quarter tied 29-29.
Jokisch led with 10 points. Anna Manilla added eight points to the board and Kenny had six points. Hastings and Breanca Cantrell aided scored a field goal each.
“Christina played a lot of good minutes,” added Wasilk. “The whole team played solid minutes defensively for us. Defense was key.”
The girls opened the new year with a win over Troy Athens on Jan.2, 69-26.
They posted 20 points in the first quarter and kept the Lady Redhawks to four points. They continued to keep up the pressure adding 23 points before the first half ended.
“We shot the ball well,” said Wasilk. “Our press was very effective in the first half. A lot of kids played and did a lot of good things.”
Davenport led the team with 15 points. Kenny added 14 points to the board. Manilla had 12 points and Hastings had eight points.
“It was a bigger point game,” said Wasilk. “But I think the league game against Avondale was a bigger game.”
The Lady Wolves opened this week on Tuesday against West Bloomfield and head to Stoney Creek for a OAA Red matchup.
“With the scheduling there aren’t any games you sit back and think it is going to be an easy one,” said Wasilk. “Every week we look at as a two game week and take it a game at a time. I know they have a few special players. It is going to be competitive.”
The Lady Wolves will also be going into the games to keep their undefeated record in the OAA Red and improve their 8-0 overall record. JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
