As ShelterBox Ambassadors, Clarkston Rotarians Mary Sloan and Jeff Lichty attended the ShelterBoxUSA Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. ShelterBox is a disaster relief organization which provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world, including those in Louisiana and Arkansas, who are affected by natural and man-made disasters. ShelterBox gets life- saving shelter to these devastated areas at the time when it is needed most, usually within 48 hours of the disaster.
As part of the three-day conference, Mary and Jeff participated in an energizing teambuilding experience at the University of Central Florida. They went through a ShelterBox ‘themed challenge course and got a flavor of the training model used by ShelterBox Response Team members when they train for delivery of the ShelterBoxes in the field.
In one activity, Jeff was one of the blindfolded team members receiving instructions from a ‘sighted? member as to how to put up the ShelterBox tent. The activity simulated people working in countries where not everyone speaks the same language while working to provide shelter for those in need.
Mary and Jeff donate their time to raise awareness of and funding for the ShelterBoxUSA organization. If you would like a presentation for your school or Scout, church or civic group, please contact Mary at marymsloan@comcast.net.
