Clarkston High School 2011 graduate Matt Vandermeer finished his first wrestling season at Lake Erie College as All-American, March 10.
He finished in sixth place at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships at Colorado State University University -Pueblo.
Vandermeer made school history by becoming Lake Erie’s first All-American Wrestler.
“I was honored to be there when our son competed,” said mom, Carol.
Vandermeer opened the day with a 6-2 win against Cody Quinn, from Minnesota State University-Mankato, for his third straight victory in the tournament.
He took on Joey Wilson, from University of Nebraska at Kearney, next. It was the second time they faced each other at the championships. Vandermeer lost the consolution round, 5-2.
The University of Mary’s Taylor Nagle beat Vandermeer 7-2 to take fifth place.
The wrestling team sent two individuals to the championships after Vandermeer and teammate Austin Gillihan, from Penn., after finishing strong in the regionals, Feb. 26.
