Erika Nowak and Andrea Dumais, both seniors at Clarkston High School, had a service learning project to plan for their current events class.
Their idea ? raise funds and awareness for the American Diabetes Association.
‘We have a friend who was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes,? said Andrea Dumais.
‘They asked if I had any ideas ? I came up with Mr. Kaul wearing a costume at lunch,? Nowak said.
Students voted by making donations into three jars, marked ‘Superman,? ‘Spider-man,? and ‘Batman.? The Caped Crusader won the vote.
‘We asked Mr. Kaul if he would dress up for a day,? Nowak said. ‘It’s really nice of him.?
Nowak works at Sutton’s Costume Store on Dixie Highway every Halloween season with her mother, Donna Nowak.
‘We’re make up artists ? we make people monsters,? Erika said.
She asked if the costume shop could help out, and they donated the Batman costume for the entire day.
‘It’s the best quality one,? she said. ‘It was very kind of them.?
In full costume, Kaul passed out cards printed with facts about diabetes, including ‘You don’t have to be a superhero to defeat diabetes,? ‘diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke,? and ‘diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death.?
‘It’s fantastic,? Kaul said. ‘Any time I can support a good cause put together by the kids, particularly on their own volition, it’s my duty to help, even if feel foolish.?
