Hello to all my new Oakland county neighbors. My name is Lance Farrell, the newest reporter at the Oxford Leader.
My wife, Mary, and I have just moved to Addison Twp from New Harmony, Indiana, a small historic town located in the toe of the state near the confluence of the Ohio and Wabash rivers.
Most recently, I taught Humanities and Composition courses at the University of Southern Indiana while reporting for the Mount Vernon Democrat. It was there that I was struck by the importance newspapers hold for our democratic republic. I find great personal fulfillment in journalism, so I jumped at the chance when I saw Jim Sherman’s call for a reporter.
Though I’ve been in town for a little over a week now, I’m already impressed with much I see here:
You’ve got some of the finest land in the state, some of the most engaged citizens in the country, and probably the best ice cream I’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling. I think I’ll stick around for a while.
When not out hiking with my pup or strumming my guitar, I’ll focus my attention on Addison Twp and various educational items for the Oxford Leader.
Oxford has a reputation for excellent education, and the Oxford Leader has an equally impressive record of community journalism, so it looks like I have my work cut out for me.
If you would like to meet me or if you have items of interest I should know about (such as a good morel spot!), I’d love to hear from you.
Give me a call at 248-628-4801.
Meanwhile, I’ll be adjusting to this northern climate.
