Independence okays store design, Comcast lease

In other business at the Tuesday, June 3 meeting of the Independence Township Board:
? Trustees approved the concept for a 60,137-square-foot Kroger store at the Regency Independence Center, planned at the northeast corner of Sashabaw and Maybee roads.
The development is subject to provisions of the Sashabaw Town Overlay District, one of which requires board approval for any building larger than 50,000 feet.
The conceptual plan includes a variation for roof pitch which met approval of the planning commission and contracted township planners.
? The board granted permission to the DTE Energy Music Theater for an extended curfew for ‘second and third stage? events.
The township’s outdoor gathering ordinance sets a 6 p.m. deadline for the end of such activities, but Palace Sports and Entertainment successfully petitioned for an 8 p.m. curfew.
? Trustees earmarked an extra $2,500 to help install parking lot lighting at the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department substation.
Clerk Joan McCrary said the budget already had $1,500 for lighting, but the expected cost will be $4,000.
Officials believed it was prudent to provide ample light for those visiting the sheriff’s substation (located in the same complex as Fire Station #1) after dark.
? After a closed session, trustees approved a lease agreement with Comcast Cable allowing the business to lease the township building which previously served as fire station #3.
The company will pay $150,000 toward remodeling of part of the building to be used as local access studios, in addition to $52,000 toward what will become their new business offices.
In addition, Comcast will pay $13,970 in the first year to lease the building.
