What do you do with old lamppost covers? You turn them into Dragon eggs for the Dragon on the Lake Scavenger Hunt.
According to Susan Perreault, executive director of the Lake Orion Downtown Development Authority (DDA), after doing the streetscape project in downtown Lake Orion they decided to keep the old globes instead of throwing them out.
‘The previous director and I were tossing around the idea of doing an art project with them, and that has spiraled into making them into dragon eggs,? she said. ‘It’s a great way to reuse them and we can do something creative for Dragon on the Lake.?
Perreault said they will put a word next to each of the eggs and the eggs will go into 20 downtown businesses.
‘There is a scavenger hunt form in the Dragon on the Lake program, and once participants write down all the words, they can rip out their entry form and drop it in a mailbox we’ll put up at Flint and Broadway,? she said. ‘Then we will draw to select a winner for 10 downtown gift certificates, which can be used at almost all the businesses.?
The Orion Art Center has coordinated with various artists to paint the eggs. Orion Art Center Director Lauren Dinneweth said next year they might make it a contest, but this year she’s asked artists that she knows or anyone who wanted to participate.
‘Next year we might make it contest, but more than anything we’ve been asking people. Home Depot is a sponsor and their people want to paint one. There are some kids who are going to participate and the Art Center will do one,? she said. ‘Some people are painting them to look like dragon eggs, others are just painting them however they want. There will be scenes of anything and we’ve given them free reign to decorate the eggs. We want them all to be unique, different and fun.?
One of the artists is Dianna Ostrand, owner of Accent on Art.
‘I’m hatching an idea about a dragon that’s hatching out its egg,? said Ostrand. ‘He’ll have arms coming out and everything.?
Ostrand also liked the idea of continuity between all businesses.
‘People used to come in here and look for clues, so this will be a visible clue and we’ll be getting people in the shop to find the egg,? she said. ‘I think that’s the whole purpose for the hunt, is to bring people in to the local businesses.?
