FD authorized to inspect fireworks sales facilities

The Oxford Fire Department is now authorized to conduct inspections of consumer fireworks sales facilities thanks to a 7-0 vote of the township board last week.
That’s good news for the township because not only does it give it some local control, it also means another revenue source for the municipality.
For conducting these inspections, local jurisdictions will receive 80 percent of the application fee paid for a consumer fireworks certificate.
The application fees, which are paid to the state, are $800 for permanent sales facilities and $480 for temporary ones.
Inspections must be conducted by a state certified fire inspector. The fire department has two ? Chief Pete Scholz and Lt. Brad Horton.
Both will attend a Feb. 4 training session regarding these inspections to be held in Lansing.
Although the inspections will be done locally, the certification, plan review and citation functions pertaining to sales facilities will remain with the state’s Bureau of Fire Services.
